An unidentified source who spoke with People Magazine this week said that Tori Spelling and husband Dean McDermott were forced to seek out extreme measures to help their ailing marriage.
The two have been reportedly grappling with rumors that McDermott cheated on Spelling. The two have four children together.
"What other options did they have?" the source said to People. "They'd already tried therapy, so it had to be something drastic."
McDermott checked himself into rehab last week, in hopes of restoring himself to full health and being able to support his family, he wrote in a statement released to People.
According to the unnamed source, McDermott's decision to leave the home for a brief period of time gave Spelling some much-needed space.
"He's now willing to be treated," the source said. "It's something that he can't control. It gives her a chance to understand why he did this and to not take it personally."
The source went on to say that 40-year-old Spelling and husband McDermott have a long road of healing ahead.
"Him going to rehab is like providing aid to a gushing wound. It's going to stop the bleeding right now, but it's going to take a long time to heal and there will be scars that will never go away," the source said.
In his statement last week, 47-year-old McDermott revealed details on his decision to go to a treatment center.
"I take full responsibility for my actions and have voluntarily checked myself into a treatment center to address some health and personal issues," he wrote. "I am truly sorry for the mistakes I have made and for the pain I've caused my family."
McDermott reportedly engaged in relations with a 28-year-old woman named Emily Goodhand, who told US Weekly that she'd met up with McDermott at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in December.
