A tractor-trailer flipped and burst into flames on Route 24 in Fall River, Mass. on Monday, after 11,000 gallons of gasoline on board soaked the entire vehicle.
Traffic authorities closed the lanes on Route 24 in both directions at around 8 a.m., leaving commuters in Southeastern Massachusetts stopped for more than two hours while emergency response teams evacuated homeowners living near the site of the crash.
According to a report by the Boston Globe, the driver did not sustain any life-threatening wounds. She was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital and treated for her injuries.
As of 10:30 a.m., the southbound lane had reopened. But the northbound lane on Route 24 will remain closed until further notice, according to state police.
Enormous plumes of heavy, dark smoke engulfed the immediate area surrounding the crash site, which happened close to Bristol Community College, Bishop Connolly High School, and two public schools of Fall River.
Elementary school staff at an unidentified institution moved to Durfee High School due to the choking smoke.
Public safety agents suggested that people living less than 200 yards of the accident relocate, but didn't issue formal orders for evacuations.
The Department of Environmental Protection has reportedly been tasked with probing the cause of the crash.
