NYU Student Commits Suicide by Jumping From Dorm Rooftop in East Village

A New York University freshman student committed suicide by jumping from a dormitory roof on Monday morning.

The 19-year-old unidentified student reportedly jumped 15 stories from the Third North Residence Hall, located in Manhattan's East Village neighborhood, according to the New York Post. Witnesses called authorities, who immediately transferred the student to Bellevue Hospital, where he later died.

"It is with great sorrow that we report that a freshman was found in an interior courtyard in the residence hall where he lived," NYU spokesperson John Beckman told the Post in an official statement. "It appears as though his death occurred as a result of a fall from the roof of the building."

The reason for the student's death is still unknown, but officials stated that an investigation has been opened into the event.

A first year student who lives in the same dormitory said a fire alarm sounded close to the time the deceased teen jumped from the roof.

"We were evacuated from the building at around 3:15. My friends said they saw a body lying in the courtyard. It's sad," she told the Post.

Beckman reported that the University was offering crisis services for students.

"We have crisis counselors at the residence hall since early this morning, providing support to student residents and the hall staff," Beckman said. "Their presence on-site will continue."

At least four NYU students have committed suicide in the past 10 years, the Post reported.
