More than 12 tractors crashed on Thursday, creating a huge pileup on the I-94 that caused the deaths of at least two people in eastern Indiana.
The accident happened at around 3:30 p.m. near Michigan City, Ind. Between Exits 26 and 40, according to the Indiana State Police, who spoke with USA Today.
Emergency response teams and law enforcement officials used large machinery and equipment to pry motorists free from the debris of the wreck, USA Today reported.
The coroner from La Porte County reported to local station WLS that a handful of other coroners from other counties were also called to the site of the accident.
About 15 to 20 auto drivers were transferred to medical facilities nearby with non-life threatening injuries.
Police closed the eastbound lanes, along with several state roads. Traffic cops redirected cars to the westbound lanes.
Although the official cause of the crash hasn't yet been identified, authorities said that a lake-effect storm blasting through the area produced white-out conditions on the I-94. Several other accidents occurred on the highway, USA Today reported.
