A Texas man was arrested and indicted on hate crime charges, after he reportedly delivered a single sucker punch to an elderly man in Katy.
Investigators say Barrett's attack could be part of a disturbing trend that police are calling "the knockout game," which calls for participants to walk up behind a random person on the street and knock them out with one slug.
On Nov. 24, 27-year-old Conrad Alvin Barrett allegedly ran up to the victim, a 79-year-old black man, and punched him, breaking his jaw in two places, according to the Associated Press.
Law enforcement officials said Barrett took a video during the attack that depicted him socking the elderly man, laughing, then shouting "knockout!" as the victim crumbled on the ground.
Barrett was indicted on Thursday for allegedly committing a hate crime. Barrett is white, the Associated Press reported.
Barrett's defense attorney George Parnham said that Barrett is bipolar, and wasn't taking proper medication when he reportedly committed the crime.
A handful of people have died from the attacks, including a 46-year-old homeless man. Most reports of the attacks have been coming from Brooklyn, N.Y., Hoboken, N.J., and New Haven, Conn.
