A few days ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 trailer was released, showing a baby Groot running off with an atomic bomb trigger. Now, fans of the series are asking if baby Groot has a major part to play and whether Groot will remain a baby during the events of the movie.

The trailer shows a couple of heartwarming scenes like Groot following instructions from Rocket Racoon, who is played by Bradley Cooper. As for Groot's maturity, James Gunn, director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, stresses on the fact that the change is kept because it has opened the film up for him.

He also adds that he was less confident about Baby Groot than Ego the Living Planet and was unsure the studio would accept his ideas. Critics had been saying that using Groot in a baby form did not fit the actual character, and that the director had done it for marketing and merchandising.

However, James Gunn's statements prove otherwise. As for the characters in the movie, James Gunn has stated that Ego alone would have been difficult for the studio to handle.

The director has gone on Facebook and posted a detailed information about Baby Groot and why he has chose to keep him that way. In his post he says that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was to be set years later, when Groot was already grown up. Keeping Groot as a baby has created new directives for the plot, including character development.

Gunn also stresses on the fact that his greatest motivation for Baby Groot has been the plot of the movie and not merchandise and marketing. The details of the post is available here.

Right now, with the movie getting a lot of hype, people are loving the idea for a Baby Groot. James Gunn had already noticed that Groot was the most favorite character of the first film, and this time around, the cute version of Groot is even more popular.
