A New York politician resigned Sunday after female members of his staff accused him of sexual harassment.
Buffalo-area Assemblyman Dennis Gabryszak allegedly made sexual advances towards seven of his current and former female employees, The Wall Street Journal reported. The 62-year-old submitted a letter announcing his resignation, saying the allegations had a profound impact on his job and family.
One of the women complained that Gabryszak grabbed her and tried to kiss her, The Wall Street Journal reported. Gabryszak also allegedly told another woman in 2012, "You're so hot, you know what I want to do with you."
The Democratic assemblyman denied all of the allegations in his resignation letter.
"There was not sexual contact between me and any members of my staff," Gabryszak wrote in the letter obtained by The Buffalo News.
"In fact, there are allegations that have been made that are demonstrably false," Gabryszak wrote. "There was mutual banter and exchanges that took place that should not have taken place because it is inappropriate in the workplace even if it does not constitute sexual harassment."
Gabryszak did not specify when exactly he will leave office. He made his announcement one day before the Assembly was to start the 2014 legislative session, The Wall Street Journal reported. Governor Andrew Cuomo asked Gabryszak to either deny the sexual harassment or resign. Gabryszak did both.
"Today, he has given us his answer," Cuomo said in a statement obtained by The Wall Street Journal. "Our representatives in elected office can and should be held to a higher standard- especially at a time when the Legislature's ethics are being questioned and the confidence of their constituents being undermined."
The scandal is the latest in a series of politicians engaging in outrageous sexual behavior. Former Congressman Anthony Weiner's 2013 mayoral campaign was ruined when it was revealed he sent sexually explicit text messages to a woman besides his wife. The same actions led to Weiner's resignation from Congress in 2011.
Reports revealed in December 2013 that former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was having an affair with a spokeswoman from his campaign for New York City Comptroller. Spitzer resigned as Governor in 2008 for his involvement with prostitutes.
