Fire in California Home Leaves Father and Two Children Dead, Mother in Grave Condition: Officials Say House Wasn't Equipped With Smoke Alarms (VIDEO)

A massive fire in a Los Angeles-area home took the lives of a father and his two children on Monday morning, according to local news reports.

The Los Angeles Times stated that the mother of the two children, who was also in the Sylmar house on Eldridge Avenue at the time of blaze, was hospitalized and in grave condition.

The second floor of the house burst into flames at about 4:37 a.m., according to KABC. Los Angeles Fire Department representative Brian Humphrey described the dwelling, which was not outfitted with fire alarms, as a "metal-clad, barn-like home." The fire ignited in a storage space on the second floor while the family slept in a living space downstairs.

Firefighters found the four family members inside the house - the mother and two children huddled together and the father sprawled out in a hallway nearby. Officials described the 12-year-old girl, 8-year-old boy, 35-year-old woman and adult male as "pulse-less and non-breathing."

Two members of the family were rushed to Olive View - UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar, while the two others were moved to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. The father and two children later died from their injuries at the medical center.

Investigators are still unsure what initially caused the blaze, which burned for 25 minutes before fire fighters could get the flames under control.

Law enforcement told KABC that the landlord might be prosecuted for not equipping the home with fire alarms.
