Sony Looking To Rival Oculus Rift With New VR Gaming Headset Technology

Sony will be throwing its hat into the virtual reality ring following a demonstration of a new feature on its current head-mounted display designed for video viewing. Virtual Reality for gaming is an area that has been largely dominated by Oculus Rift, which demonstrated its own VR headset prototype at CES 2014.

Sony's HMZ-T3W headgear has been around since September of 2012, although it was designed to be primarily a video device, according to Mashable. The idea is to slip on the display and sit back and press play on all of your favorite movies, TV shows and videos, which can be viewed on the digitally created 750-inch screen projected in front of your eyes to the device. It even offers surround sound, giving you a cinematic experience wherever you choose to use it.

At CES 2014, Sony showed a prototype of this device that comes with a head tracker that takes the experience to a whole new level. With the tracker, which is located behind your head, the virtual reality environment that is projected, can respond to your head's movements, making it perfect for interactive games - similar to the Oculus Rift design.

At the showcase, Sony was showing off a race car video capture that allowed people to view the race complete with spectators and landmarks whizzing by in the background.

While Sony's device is promising and comes with a significantly more brand-recognized name in the gaming community, its headset is still a long way off from being the rival to the Oculus Rift "Crystal Cove" 1080p prototype that was showcased at CES 2014.
