Kentucky Legislator Accidentally Fires Gun in Capitol Office; Leslie Combs Shrugs Off Semi-Automatic Weapon Discharge

A Kentucky state legislator accidentally shot her handgun while she was inside her office at the Capitol Annex Building in Frankfort.

Kentucky police told WAVE that Rep. Leslie Combs' semi-automatic discharged on Tuesday night, right before Governor Steve Beshear gave his State of the State address.

No one was injured, according to local news station KGW.

The Democractic rep said she was emptying the firearm when it suddenly went off by accident. According to KGW's report, the bullet hit the floor, then bounced into a bookcase nearby.

Combs wouldn't show reporters where the gun was discharged on Wednesday. She said she had plans to put the gun away because "I don't want to use it anymore."

"I thought it was totally clear," Combs told the press. "I am a gun owner. It happens."

Representative Jeff Greer was in Combs' office when the incident occurred, but wasn't hurt, Combs stated, adding that no one else was harmed or put in danger.

Authorities are still unsure why the gun discharged.

Combs represents House District 94, which serves areas in Pike, Letcher and Harlan Counties.
