Navy Helicopter Crash Leaves One Dead, One Missing; Three Crew Members in Hospital Care After Emergency Landing

The United States Coast Guard confirmed on Wednesday that a Navy helicopter went down nearly 18 miles east of Cape Henry at around 11 a.m., according to local news station WVEC.

Of the five passengers on board, four were rescued from the Virginia shore. One person was reportedly still missing as of Wednesday afternoon. Officials transported the group of crewmembers to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital to receive medical attention.

One man on board the helicopter was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to a WAVY report.

"Two Navy helos on scene dropped a raft, recovered the four and took them to the hospital," Coast Guard Petty Officer John Miller confirmed to WVEC.

One official who saw the four being moved out of the water said that the group was transferred via military helicopter at Sentara Norfolk General.

"The doors went flying open," Chris Kitschbaugh reported. "As soon as the helicopter touched down, the crewmembers called for people to come over with stretchers and get as much help as they could get."

According to Navy authorities who spoke with WVEC, the grounded helicopter was a MH-53E Sea Dragon.

The helicopter was flying with another MH-53E craft during a training mission, but was forced to make an emergency landing at the time of the crash.
