Rice enjoyed a 10-3 season after finishing with four straight wins. After two losses early in the season, the Owls went on to win nine of their last 10 games, including a 41-24 win over Marshall in the Conference USA championship. Now Rice is set to make their first-ever appearance in the Liberty Bowl, where the team could make school history, according to ESPN.
"To have an opportunity to go win an 11th ballgame for the first time in the history of the school and to win a Liberty Bowl championship, that's everything that was on the goals they set," Owls coach David Bailiff said, via ESPN. "All our goals are still intact. It's been an amazing run for us."
Rice's offense was powered by senior running back Charles Ross, who rushed for 1,252 yards and 14 touchdowns. Quarterback Taylor McHargue, also a senior, helmed the offense and threw for 2,261 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Mississippi State, meanwhile, finished with a 6-6 record after dropping three of their last five games. The Bulldogs do come in with a two-game winning streak under their belt after defeating Arkansas and Ole Miss to close out the regular season.
The key for Rice will be shutting down Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott. The sophomore showed his mobility throughout the season and leads the team in rushing with 751 yards and 11 scores, atop of his 1,657 passing yards and seven scores through the air.
An invite to the 2013 Liberty Bowl also made history for Rice.
"Our seniors have done something no one here has ever done, and that's play in four straight bowls," said coach Dan Mullen. "That's special."
