Bronx police received nearly 100 911 calls on Monday night, after a window-shattering explosion occurred in Pelham Bay Park.
According to law enforcement officials who spoke with the New York Daily News, a garbage can located near a row of homes in the northeast Bronx neighborhood had been stuffed with commercial-grade fireworks, then detonated.
Representatives from the New York Police Department bomb squad told the Daily News that someone put the metal mesh disposal can on the pitcher's mound in the park's baseball diamond, then set off the blast at around 11 p.m. on Monday.
The windows of three homes sitting about 200 feet away from the site of the explosion were blown out due to the severity of the blast. No injuries were reported.
Police are now testing some duct tape and a box that was part of the explosive device for DNA or fingerprints.
Neighbors' nerves were shaken after the detonation at the park occurred. The city released a statement to subscribers of the emergency alert system on Tuesday morning, WABC reported.
In the notification, city officials wrote that police were investigating a "loud noise possibly caused by illegal fireworks."
