A pair of surgical pliers was left in a young French mother's womb after she gave birth by Cesarean section at a Normandy hospital in November, the Local reported.
The French woman was shocked this week to find that the pain she'd felt for the last six weeks had been due to an undiscovered pair of pliers a surgeon had left inside her body. After having a caesarian operation at a Rouen university hospital in northern France, the unnamed mother returned home in a lot of pain, the Local reported.
"I put it down to the caesarian," she told the radio station RTL.
On the advice of her general practitioner, she returned to the hospital after six and half weeks. Doctors scanned her midriff and made a startling discovery.
"There on the screen, I saw a pair of scissors in my body," the mother told RTL.
According to the Local, the mother went through a successful operation to remove the pliers on Wednesday night. Although the surgeon who conducted the caesarian retrieved the item he'd left behind, the patient, still in hospital on Friday, is furious about what happened.
"It's not normal," she told RTL. "The doctor apologized. He did not have much of an explanation for what happened. He took responsibility."
The Charles Nicolle hospital acknowledged its fault. According to La Parisien, the pregnancy was complicated because of the patient's medical file.
A formal complaint will reportedly be filed by the mother and her husband over what is apparently not an isolated incident.
A young mother from Crétail, near Paris, recently sought legal action after a surgeon also left a pair of metal surgical pliers in her womb during an operation, the Local reported.
