Cooperstown Shooting: Former Employee From Seventh Inning Stretch Opens Fire In Store

A former employee of Seventh Inning Stretch in Cooperstown, N.Y. opened fire in the store on Monday, the Albany Times Union reported.

No one was injured in the shooting. Police are currently searching for 62-year-old Barry Renert, an ex-employee, who they believe to be behind the incident.

Renert, dressed in a black ski mask, reportedly fired a 9 mm Glock handgun around 9 a.m., which caused a store employee to shoot back. Authorities believe he is armed and dangerous and is wanted for questioning by police.

Vincent Carfagno, owner of the store, recently filed a complaint with Cooperstown village police after Renert allegedly embezzled from the shop. Following the complaint, authorities could not question Renert because he moved to Florida.

In September, Renert was arrested for criminal contempt after violating an order of protection by making unwanted personal contact and calls to a woman protected by the court order and sent to Otsego County Jail.

Sarah Korsch, a barista at Stagecoach Coffee on Pioneer Street, said staff and patrons in the village were "a little bit worried, a little bit anxious ... but more just wanting to know what's going on."

"They're definitely talking about it," she added. "Right now it's just a lot of rumors and gossip.

Following reports of the shooting, police asked residents to stay away from the Main Street area. Additionally, Bassett Medical Center was placed on lockdown as a precaution though patients were still being admitted for appointments.
