San Fransico-based start-up company Leap Motion has announced a partnership with PC giant Hewlett-Packard, otherwise known as HP. Leap Motion will embed its motion-control technology into select HP devices, according to TechSpot.com.
The new business move could work well for Leap Motion since, in terms of shipping volume,HP is the largest PC manufacturer in America.
The move could work for HP. The company has seen its market share decrease recently and PC sales are dropping all throughout the United States. This new motion-control technology is the next maneuver that could give HP a slight leg up against the competition.
As for right now, HP is not making it public what devices will get the new technology. Until the new devices debut, the PC company will start certain PC’s that come with a Leap Motion Bundle as opposed to being embedded with the technology.
As a reference, Leap Motion follows the same concept as the Kinect for Xbox 360. However, it is much stronger. Once connected to a laptop or desktop, the device creates a perimeter of about eight cubic feet around the computer. Next, users are allowed to use a variety of hand movements or gestures from various objects in order to control the computer.
Leap Motion rates its technology at 200 times more accurate than the Kinect.
Currently consumers can pre-order the product for $79.99 on the company’s website. The technology may also be pre-ordered on BestBuy.com—only in the United States—and Amazon.uk—solely for the United Kingdom. The product is expected to arrive in stores in May.
The HP devices will come with the Airspace App Store. This Leap Motion app store is seen by the company as a way to widen its audience. The company looks forward to great results once the app store and technology is embedded into the HP devices.
