Pi Delta Psi Hazing: Baruch College Frat Members Face Criminal Charges After Michael Deng Dies During Ritual (VIDEO)

Pi Delta Psi fraternity brothers from Baruch College in Queens will face criminal charges after trying to cover-up the death of Michael Deng, 19, during a hazing ritual on Monday, according to the New York Daily News.

Deng was one of four new pledges taken to the rented home in rural Tunkhannock Township, Pennsylvania, to be initiated into the fraternity, which is one of the larger Asian-American fraternities in the country, the Daily News reported.

Deng, who was a freshman at Baruch, was one of 30 people who took a trip to the Poconos to bring in new pledges when they went out into the snow for the "Glass Ceiling" ritual, the Daily News reported.

Deng was then blindfolded and made to carry a backpack containing 20 pounds of sand. The objective of the ritual is for the pledge to make his way towards the person calling their name "while other fraternity brothers physically prevent that from happening," witnesses said in the affidavit, CNN reported. It was during the ritual that Deng fall back, hit his head and was knocked unconscious immediately, according to the document.

The fraternity members then proceeded to bring Deng into the house and placed him by the fire to warm him up after lying in the snow while they Goggled his symptoms, according to CNN. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. but Deng arrived at the Pennsylvania hospital, which was 30 miles from the rented home, at 6:42 a.m., according to the affidavit.

"Deng was reported to be unconscious and unresponsive immediately after he fell," the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department wrote in the report, according to the Daily News. "Deng was then carried inside and placed by a fire and continued to be unresponsive. ... Deng's clothes were changed while other males at the residence Goggled Deng's symptoms and found the closest hospital."

"A minimum of at least two hours went by before he actually received any type of medical care," Pocono Mountain Regional Police Chief Harry Lewis said, according to CNN.

Members of the fraternity told authorities they saw when Deng got pushed but couldn't say who did it because it was still dark out while the ritual took place.

"The transport was done in a private vehicle ... which means this poor victim wasn't receiving any medical attention until the time he actually made it to the hospital," Monroe County District Attorney E. David Christine told CNN.

Deng suffered a massive head injury which caused brain damage, he has scratches on his left hip, a cut on his wrist and bruised knees, the report said, according to the Daily News. "Deng's condition did not change and medical tests confirmed that he was brain dead," the affidavit said.

The persons to be charged and the charges have not been released due to the continuing investigation into Deng's death, Christine said, but they're coming.

Baruch officials issued a statement saying the fraternity event was not approved by the school, adding that "Michael's death is a deeply painful reminder that no individual should ever be put into a position where his or her personal safety is in jeopardy."
