Jameis Winston Case: Accuser’s Family To Hold Press Conference On Friday, 1 Day Before Heisman Trophy Is Awarded

The family of the woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual battery is scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday, one day before the Heisman Trophy is awarded. The family is expected to address the State Attorney's investigation, USA Today Sports reports.

State Attorney Willie Meggs announced last week the state would not charge Winston for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in December 2012. Meggs called it a "one-night stand" and cited a lack of evidence in his decision to not pursue criminal charges against Winston.

"We came to the decision that it was not a case that we could bring forward, because we would not have the burden of proof, the probable cause, and the reasonable likelihood of conviction," Meggs said at the Dec. 5 news conference, via WCTV.

The family criticized the Tallahassee Police Department's initial investigation, which Meggs' office wasn't notified about until almost a year after the alleged incident took place.

The family may also address Meggs' seemingly cavalier attitude at the news conference, where he smiled and laughed multiple times with reporters.

After Winston was cleared of any wrongdoing, he released a statement (via ESPN):

"I want to thank my family, friends, coaches and teammates for standing by me during a difficult time. I also want to thank the State Attorney's Office for examining all of the facts and reaching a decision in a conclusive manner. It's been difficult to stay silent through this process, but I never lost faith in the truth and in who I am. I'm very relieved I'll be able to continue my education at Florida State and I'm excited I can now get back to helping our team achieve its goals."

The family's press conference is scheduled one day before the Heisman Trophy is awarded, which most polls predict Winston to win. The redshirt freshman guided the Seminoles to a 13-0 record and finished the season with 3,820 passing yards, 38 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.
