John Oliver and HBO's "Last Week Tonight" released a new clip on Sunday in anticipation of the show's return next month. In the all-new web exclusive, Oliver explained how to successfully follow through on those New Year's resolutions that people made for 2016.

Oliver called New Year's resolutions "the exact middle ground between lying to yourself, and lying to other people" before he told his viewers to either lower their standards or "raise them to a ridiculous, unreachable height."

"The main problem with New Year's resolutions is that we set our expectations way too high," Oliver said in the video. "For instance, lots of people say they want to exercise more. But that's hard. Exercise is like reading for your muscles - except you can't watch a movie of someone else exercising and basically get the gist of it."

The host then explained the one thing for people to keep in mind when they make their resolutions. "The key thing with resolutions, is not how to keep them, but how to revise them once you've failed," explained Oliver.

For example, "Instead of jogging, simply try waking up late for work - or taking a pregnancy test."

This is not the first web exclusive video the show has released since it went on hiatus in the fall. The British comedian also released a video about re-gifting presents right before Christmas, as HNGN previously reported.

"Last Week Tonight" returns to HBO on Feb. 14 at 11 p.m. EST.
