Writer/director James Gunn made it known earlier this year that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" would reveal the identity of Peter Quill/Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father. Today comes a report from The Wrap that Gunn is courting Kurt Russell for the role.

According to the outlet, Marvel Studios has not officially offered Russell the role yet and the actor hasn't had a chance to read the script. However, the two sides are still expected to meet soon to discuss the opportunity.

Given the immense popularity of "Guardians of the Galaxy" along with the film's box office and critical success, joining the sequel would put Russell in yet another highly popular franchise (the other being "Fast and Furious"). Adding Russell to the cast would also give the anticipated follow up another impressive name to look forward to.

Much has been made about the identity of Star-Lord's father. Gunn has said that the Marvel Cinematic Universe version will differ from the original comics. A few weeks ago, Heroic Hollywood reported that comic book character Mar-Vel was to be introduced as Peter Quill's old man. However, Gunn quickly shot that rumor down. We'll all just have to wait and see to find out the truth.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
