The sequel to "Independence Day" is absolutely happening. In fact, it's reached a point where if one script falls through, there's a second that will be able to take its place. Yes, it appears that there are not one but two finished scripts, one that includes the star of the first film Will Smith and one that does not.
The director Roland Emmerich sat down with The Playlist in order to promote the DVD and BluRay release of his latest film "White House Down." Not surprisingly the conversation quickly turned to the topic of the highly anticipated sequel to one of the most successful summer blockbusters of all time, where 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue also takes a pretty notorious hit, points out IGN.
According to Emmerich, the follow up to the 1996 "Independence Day" is a "daily battle" but when asked if he thinks the leading man Smith might reprise his role as the fighter pilot Steven Hiller Emmerich was quoted as saying "It's looking good [for the version with Smith]."
In the first film, Smith played a top fighter pilot who, after an initial and unsuccessful battle with the aliens, manages to capture a craft and an alien and brings it to Area 51. From there he becomes an asset in the fight for humanity. Not so spoiler alert - he survives his encounter and has no visible reason not to return in the sequel.
Returning cast members supposedly making their return for the sequel include Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum. So far the polot for the sequel is being kept under tight wraps, but it's probably safe to assume that it will involve aliens attacking earth once again.
What do you think of an Independence Day sequel? Will you be interested in the film if it doesn't star Will Smith? How would you write him out of the role? Comment and share your thoughts with us below.
