Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver and Robbinsville High School varsity football coach Irving Fryar and his mother have been charged with conspiracy in theft for a mortgage fraud scam the two were allegedly running.
The Attorney General's office told NJ.com that a state grand jury indicted 51-year-old Fryar of Springfield and his 72-year-old mother Allene McGhee of Willingboro on grounds that they allegedly organized a scheme to pilfer more than $690,000 after McGhee was given five home equity loans on her house within a span of six days.
Superintendent of Robbinsville High School Steven Mayer released a statement Wednesday afternoon, saying that Fryar was to take a leave of unpaid absence from his job as varsity football coach. For the time being, assistant coach Mitar Rudnavor will attend to all of Fryar's usual duties.
The court accused Fryar of working with his mother to get five home equity loans between the time period of Dec. 16, 2009 and Dec. 21, 2009. The two used McGhee's home in Willingboro as collateral. McGhee and Fryar also reportedly lied to banks by applying for loans that they quickly closed down, in addition to intentionally withholding information about pre-existing loans. All the banks paid up, believing that they were the first lienees on the property and that the pair would pay the loan back in full.
Fryar and McGhee reportedly ran this scheme at five different banks.
"This is not a case in which Mr. Fryar and his mother simply omitted or misstated information on loan applications," Acting Attorney General John Hoffman reported in a statement obtained by NJ.com. "This indictment alleges that they engaged in an elaborate criminal scheme that was designed to defraud these banks of hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is disappointing that someone with an illustrious career in professional sports who is now a minister and coach in the community is charged with this crime, but he must face justice like anyone else."
Fryar, who played for four NFL teams from 1984 to 2000 including the Philadelphia Eagles, is also a pastor at New Jerusalem House of God, a church that he founded.
