A Maryland man was arrested on Tuesday after police say he tried to carjack the mother of Cal Ripken, Jr. outside of an Aberdeen bank, ABC 2 reported.
Jesse A. Bowen, 33, was charged with attempted armed robbery, attempted robbery, attempted armed carjacking, possession of a dangerous weapon, first-degree assault, and two drug-related charges.
Authorities detained Bowen after recognizing him in security footage taken at the National Bank of Rising Sun branch.
"The officer had had contact with this individual a week or so prior, and when they saw the photo it spurred their memory and they said 'yeah I think that's who this is,'" said Lt. Fred Budnick of the Aberdeen Police Department.
Ripken's mother, Violet, was leaving the bank and walking to her car around 3 p.m. when Bowen approached her, pulling a gun out and demanding her car. Instead of listening to his demands, she thwarted his entire plan.
"She was able to on her key fob hit the panic button," Budnick said.
Quickly after the alarm was enacted, Bowen ran away and Ripken remained uninjured, police said.
The is not the first instance where Violet Ripken, 75, was the victim of a serious crime. In July, an unidentified man kidnapped her at gunpoint from her home and brought her back the next day.
Authorities do not believe Bowen is related to last year's kidnapping.
"We'll certainly look at it, but the physical descriptions are not really consistent with what we were looking at last year," Budnick added.
In August of this year, Cal Ripken Jr. pledged a $100,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man responsible for his mother's kidnapping.
