The Russian Government has announced that it will take the reigns on the video game industry in its country to develop more "patriotic" games for consumers.
This move would not only create games that are more patriotic for gamers in that part of the world but the move also has potential ramifications for the government to ban foreign video games that "distort history."
The Russian Military History Society will be in charge of the video game project and begin with a title that details the inception of Russian military aviation during the first World War according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter.
"A video game has to have not only an entertainment value, but it also has to teach and be conducive to patriotic education," Arseny Mironov, an aid to the Russian Culture Minister, told Izvestiya, a Russian newspaper.
IGN makes the case that perhaps Russia has grown sour over being portrayed as the villains in mainstream titles.
"The RMHS feels the 'Russian warrior' has been portrayed wrongly in past games, namely Company of Heroes II. In Relic's RTS title, Russian soldiers are portrayed as 'criminals,' the RMHS says, and the title also isn't translated into Russian. The culture ministry said that foreign games like this can 'discredit the Russian soldier,'" the site writes.
So far the government is looking into developers that are local for the prospect of developing a culturally friendly and historically accurate (by Russian standards) video game in the near future.
Tell us what you think, are Russian people right to finally be fed up with being the bad guy in most major war titles or is creating a game that leans toward Russian patriotism just as bias on the other end of the spectrum? Comment and share your thoughts below. This one is a bit of a thinker.
