Denver Couple Charged And Arrested With Child Abuse For The Second Time (VIDEO)

Denver couple Wayne Sperling, 66, and Lorinda Bailey, 35, were arrested and charged with four counts of felony child abuse on Oct.1; their four children were moved into protective care ABC News reported.

This is the second time the couple is charged and have children taken from them,

In 2006, Sperling and Bailey had three children taken away after a welfare check was conducted leading authorities to remove the children from the couple's custody and into protective care due to child abuse, according to ABC.

Evidence of the abuse first occurred when Bailey brought her 2-year-old son to St. Joseph's Childrens Hospital in Denver with a cut on his forehead on Sept. 29. She told the doctor the cut was from a fall, according to an arrest affidavit, ABC reported.

According to official reports, all four children were placed in protective custody and were examined at a hospital where they were found to be "non-verbal and malnourished." None of the children were toilet-trained and were not in daycare or school.

The report states the doctor also found "bruising and swelling" near the child's ear that was "not consistent with the report but was consistent with pinching." A welfare visit was shortly ordered for the three other boys, ages 4, 5, and 6 who were also living at the house, according to ABC.

A police officer stated the child was "non-verbal and smelled unwashed and smelled of cigarette smoke," the affidavit said. The welfare officer who visited the house reported that when Sperling opened the door a strong odor of a decomposing animal came from the house. The officer also reported five cats running around the apartment, feces on the floor throughout the apartment, and no sheets or pillows on a single mattress and a bunk bed, according to ABC.

"The officer noted the children appeared to be non-verbal and were making 'infant like noises' to each other," authorities wrote. "The officer noted he could not determine any age or developmental difference between the three children."

Bailey and Sperling made their first court appearance on Tuesday; Sperling remains in custody, while Bailey is out on bond. Sperling denies the children had any developmental delays and that they spoke to her without any difficulty, ABC reports.
