A recently released video of a brawl between a group of motorcycle riders and a man in an SUV shows an undercover NYPD officer punching and shattering one of the vehicle's windows; the video contradicts the officer's previous statement that he had witnessed the attack but did not participate, according to NBC News.
The attack was caught on tape and became national news when the video went viral. After the SUV driven by Alexian Lien bumped into one of the motorcycles the group of bikers swarmed around the vehicle. Feeling threatened Lien hit the gas and ran over Edwin Meises, Jr., breaking both of his legs and giving him spinal injuries that may leave him paralyzed, according to the Christian Science Monitor.
The group of motorcycle riders chased Lien and eventually caught up to him and pulled him out of the vehicle and beat him. Four people have been charged in the attack thus far. Lien has not been charged with a crime either.
The off duty officer came forward and admitted to being on the scene four days after the beating took place. Undercover officers are required to report a crime immediately although they are not required to stop the crime, according to NBC New York.
"It shows him punching the back window, and then as the camera is moving, it catches him maybe throwing a kick at the side of the car," a source who had seen the yet to be made public video told the New York Daily News. "Once the beating starts you can see him hop on the bike and take off. So he's not involved in the assault, but he lied. He wasn't truthful."
Chief police spokesman John McCarthy said that the officer has been suspended and stripped of his badge and gun while an investigation as to why he delayed reporting the incident is conducted by internal affairs, according to the Christian Science Monitor.
