The Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday quickly became a shootout and ended as the fourth-highest scoring game in NFL history. A late fourth quarter interception thrown by Tony Romo marred an otherwise perfect game from the quarterback and helped Peyton Manning and the Broncos remain undefeated.
With Dallas having no timeouts, Manning ran the clock down to two seconds and called a timeout to give kicker Matt Prater a chance to break the 48-48 tie and win the game. Prater nailed the short kick and gave the Broncos the win, 51-48. Manning turned in another great performance, completing 33-of-42 passes for 414 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
For Dallas, the game ended on a familiar note: a late turnover by Romo. The quarterback looked unstoppable for most of the game and was able to match the offensive onslaught by Manning. Romo went 25-of-36 for 506 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
While he became the first Cowboy to throw for over 500 yards, it'll be the costly interception he threw that garners him the most attention this week. The interception came with 2:04 seconds left in the fourth quarter with the game tied. Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan jumped in front of tight end Gavin Escobar and picked off Romo at the Dallas 24.
"I was baiting him," Trevathan said after the game, via ESPN. "Romo threw it and I felt like, man, hopefully I don't drop the ball when I get in the end zone this time. I fell to the ground and said, 'Forget it!'"
Losing because of costly turnovers by Romo has become a familiar narrative in Dallas. Late interceptions have lost Dallas multiple games over the last couple seasons. His interception on Sunday was the 23rd fourth-quarter interception of his career, according to ESPN. Dallas has lost each of its last eight games where Romo has tossed a fourth-quarter pick.
