An alleged rapist charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old New York girl in March 2009 was sent back to the United States from India.
32-year-old Amit Singh appeared in Nassau County court on Monday, where he was ordered held without bail, the Associated Press reported. Singh has been charged with second-degree rape, child endangerment and sexual abuse. He also violated probation on a 2007 cocaine possession conviction, the Long Island Press reported.
In court, the prosecution stated that Singh attacked the 14-year-old girl on her walk to school in Elmont on Long Island. After unsuccessfully coaxing her into his house on Rosalind Avenue, Singh grabbed the teenager off the street, forced her into the home and raped her. He then drove her to Sewanhaka High School at 10 a.m.
The girl told a teacher what happened, then identified Singh in a photo lineup. But Singh, who was 27 at the time, had already gotten onto a plane bound for India before investigators could gain DNA evidence proving his reported connection to the crime.
After releasing a warrant for his arrest in 2011, Interpol arrested and indicted Singh when they found him trying to get on a flight to Thailand.
For the past two years, Singh has been battling extradition, but Indian law enforcement officials still agreed to send him back to the United States. Government officials from the U.S. flew to India last Friday to bring Singh back to New York. The alleged attacker was given to Special Victims Squad detectives when he landed on American ground.
Singh could get up to 25 years in prison for the crimes he allegedly committed. He'll make another court appearance on Oct. 11.
