One of the biggest trends in the workplace is the idea of a standing desk. We all know that human being should stand more than they should stay hunched over a computer desk all day. However, if you're used to planting for your 8-hour shift, making the change to a standing desk might take a bit of adjustment that you just don't have the time for. The Stir Kinetic Desk may be just what you need to adapt your lifestyle to the standing variety.
The desk is adjustable from a touch screen located at the bottom left-hand corner and will constantly learn your sitting and standing habits while working. Over time, if set to "active mode," the desk will start to adjust itself automatically base don when you typically decide that it's time to stand during the day, according to WIRED.
For example, if you'd prefer to do your work sitting for 20 minutes at the top of every hour, after a few manual adjustments when you first get the smart desk it will begin to gently adjust its height, ensuring none of your precious bobble heads jerk or go flying off the desk.
"It's like a lot of things that are good for me," said Stir CEO JP Labrosse. "I don't actively make the time to use them even if it's simple." The Stir desk is hoping to make this process even simpler by automating it.
The desk comes in two distinct modes, Passive mode and Active mode. The difference is, in passive mode, the desk will learn your style but will only move if you use the manual touch-screen. In active mode, the desk dares you to better yourself by automatically adjusting the height at times of the day when it has noticed you'd prefer to stand.
The Stir team, which is made up of former Apple and IDEO employees, says it is ramping up its production in the second half of 2013. The hope is to make the Stir smart desks a common stable in every office building around the world.
