Philosophy is no joke.
At least, that's how two men in southern Russia felt, after their heated debate on philosopher Immanuel Kant quickly escalated, resulting in one man being shot in the head.
Police in the city of Rostov-on-Don told Russian news agency RIA that the two men were standing in line to purchase beer at a local supermarket when they began fighting over the ideals and writings of German philosopher Kant. Things bubbled to a boiling point, apparently, since one man pulled out a gun and fired off a few rubber bullets at the other.
"In the course of the fight, the suspect took out a pistol firing rubber bullets and fired several shots at his opponent," the police reported. "After firing repeatedly at his opponent, the shooter fled the scene."
Officials stated they were able to catch up with the shooter and snatch the weapon from his possession. The man who fired the gun was detained, while the victim was rushed to the hospital. He is currently in stable condition, they said. Rostov-on-Don officials did not give the details on the philosophical argument.
The Guardian reported that the two men, who were both in their late twenties, got into the scuffle as a result of a misinterpreted insult, but this has yet to be confirmed.
The shooter could face charges of intentional infliction of serious bodily harm, with a potential sentencing of up to 15 years of jail time.
Kant is well-known for his writings in "The Critique of Pure Reason," along with his central argument that reason is the source of morality, according to Russia's RT.
