Meghan McCain Says Republicans Are 'Not All Crazy Rednecks,' 'Extreme Right' Runs the Party

Meghan McCain, the daughter of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told Politico in an interview that members of the Republican Party are "not all crazy rednecks" and that the party will need to stop being run by the extreme right wing if they are going to survive, according to the Huffington Post.

"I'm just frustrated that nobody seems to be listening to reason," McCain told Politico. "People within the Republican Party don't have to listen to me. But, at some point, they will have to listen to facts, to trends in this country. We're losing young voters, women voters and minority voters... I just think that's a recipe for failure... The extreme right wing of the party is still running everything."

The 28-year-old McCain has spent the last five years involved in political punditry in a variety of different ways; writing for the Daily Beast and contributing to MSNBC among other things. After five years the lack of civility in political punditry has driven McCain away, according to Politico.

"I'm just not a good pundit, it's that simple," McCain said. "I'm not someone who wants to wake up every morning and fight with people everyday and think all Democrats are evil and going to hell and all Republicans are perfect. It's not who I am and it's not what I believe."

McCain is about to appear in a new show called "Raising McCain" on Pivot, a recently launched cable channel. The show will be one part talk show and one part documentary about McCain's life. The show is hopefully going to be a lot more fun for McCain than the brutal world of punditry was.

"I was burned out after the election," McCain said. "It's really difficult to be a socially liberal Republican in the culture we live in, and I'm someone who wants this country to be united. This show is really rowdy and crazy and fun and still substantive at the same time, and I've really enjoyed working for a place that doesn't want to change me and doesn't want me to be more serious or just talk about politics all the time."

John McCain has not always approved of the work that his daughter has done but he is fully supportive of his daughter's new show and its attempt to give younger viewers something to watch with a bit of substance, according to the Huffington Post.

"We have had conflicts many times," McCain said about her father. "He did not love when I worked at MSNBC. He has really been a great champion of this show and believing that young people want more substance."
