NBC has confirmed plans for a "Xena: Warrior Princess" reboot after weeks of speculation.

The network is in the "early stages" of development to build a new show around the female warrior character that originally spun off the '90s series, "Hercules."

"Yes, we're in the early stages of developing a new take on 'Xena' and we're looking for a writer. We want to do it," NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.

So far, only the original executive producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi are involved in the project. NBC also wants to involve the original "Xena" star Lucy Lawless (and Tapert's wife) either for an on-screen or behind-the-scenes role but she has not signed on in any official capacity yet.

"We'd love to have Lucy be a part of it - if we felt that her presence didn't overshadow the direction we take with it. I'm not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn't playing Xena, and I don't know if that's a direction we'll ever go," Greenblatt said.

The more "modern reboot" would feature a Xena who possesses the same "charm and charisma" as Lawless and smarts like Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Producers want a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation.

Lawless will next star opposite her "Xena" co-star Bruce Campbell in "Ash vs. Evil Dead" on Starz!
