Facebook announced its new Graph Search feature at a press event Tuesday and is now looking for advertisers to take the project further.
"Come see what we're building" read the Facebook invite the company sent out to the media to announce their newly built feature. With the new Graph Search, Facebook has taken baby steps into the world of search engines. However, the move will open up new doors to tantalizing possibilities.
While Google does a good search job, the new Facebook search bar promises to deliver more customized results and one can see friend's opinions as well. For example, if a person is searching for "the best Chinese Restaurant" in the vicinity, he just needs to type in the question on the search bar and it will provide him with a list along with his friend's "Likes" in ascending order.
The feature is reportedly very attractive to advertisers who aim at putting their ads up on Facebook. The new feature is poised to make tough competition for website giants like Linkedln, Google, Yelp, etc.
"Facebook is setting the stage for the inevitable search war with Google, a war that advertisers and marketers want to happen so that there is more diversity and opportunity," said Chris Winfield, co-founder of BlueGlass Interactive, a search and social digital marketing agency whose clients include Disney, eBay and the NFL. "This lays the groundwork for them to roll-out their long-rumored AdWords/AdSense competitor that we should see next."
While the new feature promises a lot of things, users will now have to be extra careful with their privacy settings. They would need to recheck every post or picture shared on Facebook to ensure it remains private.
Since facebook will be looking closely into the "about" section of every user to provide the best search results to their users, they would need to check and see that their privacy settings are in place to keep this information private and not showing up on search results.
