Multiple reports say gunshots were fired at the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in DeKalb County in Georgia, and police have the alleged shooter in custody.
According to Channel 2 Action News, "the suspect is a white man in his 20s who was armed with an AK-47 and dressed in black." Reports say the shooter surrendered without a fights, and there were no injuries. The school was evacuated to a nearby Walmart. (Click here to view photos)
Parents were reportedly asked to pick up there children there, according to Channel 2 Action News:
"A woman in the school office called Channel 2 Action News to report that there was a shooter in the school. She told a Channel 2 assignment desk editor that the gunman asked her to call WSB-TV and police. Shots could be heard over the call."
There is footage of children running from the school building, similar to the shooting that occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, 2012.
On Tuesday, officials announced a black iron gate will be replace traffic cones blocking the entrance to the school, USA Today reports.
The new gate is supposed to keep people off of the property until the community decides what is best to do with the school.
According to USA Today, a local task force approved a plan to demolish the property and build a new school using a $50 million grant from the state. The proposal has yet to be approved by the town residents.
The school has been closed to the public since the shooting that killed 26 people, including children, and the main entrance has been blocked using concrete barriers and traffic cones. Police offers take shifts guarding the school around the clock, according to USA Today.
Residents and officials must approve the potential demolition of the school by November.
