The U.S. has confirmed that Israeli forces have killed an American teenager during clashes in the West Bank on Friday, according to USA Today.

A family member identified the victim as 14-year-old Orwah Hammad, of New York City, who moved to the West Bank when he was 6 years old.

"The United States expresses its deepest condolences to the family of a U.S. citizen minor who was killed by the Israeli Defense Forces during clashes in Silwad," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a Friday statement.

Israeli forces were battling Palestinians who were throwing stones and Molotov cocktails when Hammad was reportedly shot in the head, according to the BBC.

IDF "identified a person throwing a Molotov cocktail and fired at him. The force identified a hit and the IDF is now investigating the incident," an unnamed Israeli army spokesman told NBC News.

The State Department also called for a "speedy and transparent investigation" and said they will stay abreast of the situation.

"We continue to urge all parties to help restore calm and avoid escalating tensions in the wake of the tragic incidents in Jerusalem and the West Bank," Psaki said.

Tensions in the region have remained high despite a ceasefire that ended a deadly 50-day conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza. The violence escalated Wednesday when a 3-month-old American girl was killed after a Palestinian man drove a car into a crowd at a Jerusalem train stop, USA Today reported.

The teenager's father, Abed Al-Wahhab, is reportedly traveling to Ramallah for Hammond's funeral on Sunday.
