In "Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag," you vicariously live the life of a pirate through Edward Kenway and his adventures, and there is one thing a pirate needs to survive: his ship.

Kenway is the captain of the Jackdaw, a beauty that put's "Assassin's Creed III" Aquila to shame, once you upgrade it, of course.

To upgrade your pirated ship, you will need to put in some work to get the supplies needed to craft items.  In order to craft the needed upgrade items, you will need to hunt.

"Rare animals (Red Howler Monkey, White Jaguar) only appear in the areas specified below and may spawn randomly at those locations. Fast travel to force animals to respawn. For each animal killed you get a Bone in addition to the unique resource which can be used for Crafting," IGN reports.

IGN has compiled a list of the whereabouts of the animals, including places to harpoon whales and sharks, an ability you get after your complete sequence 3 in the game.  Check out the full list of animal locations here.

Now hunting is only effective when you know what you need.  You will constantly be upgrading your ship, as well as Kenway's items.  Once you have gathered the necessary ingredients, you can craft items from your ship or upgrade Kenway's weapons.

For example, in to upgrade you Beserk Dart, which you will use to make enemies go insane, you will need Capuchin Monkey Pelt times 2.  The upgrade will give you an additional 20 seconds of the Beserk effect on your enemy.

As for the Jackdaw, your upgrade recipes will be a bit simpler, but have multiple opportunities to upgrade.  For example, you will need reales and metal to upgrade the Broadside Cannons on your ship.  You can upgrade the weapons 7 times to give you more firepower.
