Apple users can expect to see the operating system on their mobile iOS devices to look completely different on Sept. 18 when the long awaited iOS 7 update becomes available for download across most of Apple's mobile devices.

The new John Ive-inspired operating system's release date was announced at the company's Cupertino Calif. headquarters at a major press event where it unveiled the newest installment to its flagship smartphone the iPhone 5S and the new low-cost colorful handset, the iPhone 5C.

The iOS 7 update will bring a completely reskinned and redesigned look to all of the Apple mobile devices. It offers updates to the notification center as well as a control panel that puts all of iPhone user's most frequently used Settings options in one place such as brightness, volume, WiFi options and, for the first time, a flashlight option that doesn't require a third-party App.

Siri will be getting an upgrade too. Not only can Siri now be your personal assistant in a man's voice, she can search twitter for information. At the press event the company showed a situation in which a user could ask Siri "What is Lady Gaga saying?" the software then took to Twitter to present a handful of the performer's latest tweets.

If maybe technical specs aren't your thing, one new feature to get excited about with the iOS 7 update, other than all the new functionalities like the ability to use an improved Siri or search the phone directly from the unlock screen, is the inclusion of funky new electronic ringtones and text notification tones. The new operating system will allow users to check out a bevy of new sound options and will give users more options than the iconic Miramba tone.

The iOS 7 update will be available for iPhones 4 and above, iPad 2 and above, the iPad Mini and the fifth generation iPod Touch. Users can expect to see a red notification badge on their 'Settings' icon on their mobile device. Follow the directions on the update and your phone will then have a completely new look. If you're not in a position to spend money on the new iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C, don't worry, the new iOS update comes complete with a slew of brand new features that will make your older model phone seem like new.
