Once San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver went down with a torn ACL it appeared that verteran corner Nnamdi Asomugha would have more than a good chance of getting a spot on the roster.
However, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s comments Friday hint that Asomugha’s chance may not be so good, according to NFL.com.
"We didn't really know what we were getting when we got Nnamdi. He's had some good days out here and some days where you weren't sure if he was going to still have it," Fangio said according to to The Associated Press. "I think we're kind of in between with him right now. Hopefully he'll be able to still have some gas left in his tank to go out there and play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia. So, I think the jury is still out there."
NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus suggested Asomugha’s possible job security Thursday. However, as the website’s Chris Wesseling’s points out Asomghua spent the last two seasons playing at a sub-par level with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 11-year veteran is under a one-year contract with the reigning NFC champs. The contract contains no guarantees.
Although Culliver was not going to start for the 49ers he would have still gotten plenty of playing time. He was on the field last year in situations when the 49ers defense faced sets that contained three and four wide receivers.
The 49ers are hoping to make it back to the Super Bowl this season after losing to the Baltimore Ravens 31-28 in Super Bowl XLVII.
