A developer discovered that Apple is indeed preparing to launch a second-generation iPad mini 2 that will be equipped with a faster A6 chip but still lacking a retina display.
The iOS and web developer who leaked the information is Nick Frey who shared it to the technology news website 9to5Mac on Wednesday. He sent it to the website through an iOS 7 software development kit, or SDK, which he got from a hidden file listing all the devices compatible with iOS 7. He was certain that the data was accurate because he counterchecked the details with iOS 7 beta itself.
The leaked information stated that Apple is working on three iPad mini 2 models dubbed as “2,8” , “2,9” and “2,10”. It is just a continuation of the catalog of the first iPad mini models labeled by the company as “2,5,” , “2,6” and iPad “2,7”.
There were code names which refer to the iPad mini 2 Wi-Fi only as “J75” and the two Wi-Fi with 3G models dubbed as “J76” and “J77”.
iOS 7 beta also confirmed that the new iPad mini will have the same processor as that of iPhone 5—the A6 chip. This is a rational upgrade as the current version runs on an A5 chip processor. This means the new version will allow users to have faster Internet browsing experience, load movies rapidly, and have better experience when playing games and running graphics-heavy applications.
The only drawback is that it confirmed that the new iPad mini will not have a retina display contrary to previous rumors. iOS 7 beta also revealed that aside from the improved processor, everything else will be the same for the iPad mini 2.
