Emma Watson stars in "The Bling Ring," director Sofia Coppola's fact-based film based on the burglaries of celebrity homes from Oct. 2008 to Aug. 2009.
The teen burglars stole $3 million in designer wear from celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.
According to a review by USA Today, the film has "visual flourishes" and a" few snarky laughs," but doesn't say enough about the "celebrity-worshiping, materialistic culture that spawned this crime spree."
"Coppola's appreciation for tales of youth and celebrity makes sense with this material. But the film - which Coppola wrote, based on a Vanity Fair article - is limited," The New York Daily news wrote. "The kids' vampiric obsession with fame is of-the-moment, and maybe defines it, but comes up short as drama. Leslie Mann's turn as Nicki's dopey New Age mom seems added to show that idiocy doesn't fall far from the tree."
Watson plays Nicki, who is home-schooled by her mother Laurie (portrayed by Mann). Actress Katie Chang portrays the group's ringleader Rebecca.
The film features young actors to portray the "Hollywood Hills Burglars:" Claire Julien (Chole), Georgia Rock (Emily), Israel Broussard (Marc) and Taissa Farmiga (Sam).
"The characters self-absorbed, these kids seem like budding sociopaths, with the possible exception of Marc, who mostly yearns to be accepted," according to USA Today. "He shows a jot of a conscience when he suggests that Rebecca should not abscond with Hilton's dog, along with her designer bra and sunglasses."
Multiple reviews say that "disgust" will be the most common emotion viewers will experience, referring to the behavior of the young burglars.
"The film is like a more expertly shot episode of a reality show, with the final product as disposable as last year's swag," USA Today wrote.
The film is available in theaters near you on June 14.
