It's not classified information that "Constantine" hasn't been the ratings champion that NBC pinned its hopes on for this season. Regardless, it is receiving higher ratings than "Hannibal," which previously occupied the same timeslot "Constantine" currently has.

And although it is still undecided whether or not "Constantine" will return next year, David S. Goyer ("Man of Steel") gave some insight into the show's overall chances for survival. Here is what the writer/producer/director had to say (via Deadline) regarding "Constantine's" shot at renewal:

"It's not dead, at all, it's solidly in contention for a second season of NBC, which is still supporting it. 'Constantine' got caught in the midst of a change that is happening at the networks. It gets big numbers on DVR and online views, but it is sort of a tweener that doesn't fit the traditional viewing box at the big networks. It's not 'State Of Affairs', it's just not that kind of show, but NBC likes it. It's frustrating what happened because creatively we've really started to hit our stride and people are responding to that. If I were a betting man, I would say there's an excellent chance for a second season."

Here's hoping that the man isn't pulling out collective legs here because I've rather enjoyed what the show has offered so far. It's not perfect, but Matt Ryan is an excellent John Constantine and Angélica Celaya provides ample (and rather gorgeous) support as the mysterious Zed. In all, the show has serious potential...let's see if the network has the guts to let it realize that potential.
