The board for the Montoursville School District approved the hiring of former New York Yankees star pitcher Mike Mussina—as their new high school basketball coach, according to the Williamsport Sun Gazette.
The hiring was approved at a board meeting Tuesday night. The proposal passed unanimously with an 8-0 vote.
Mussina will replace the former basketball coach, Mark Molesky, who will stay on as Mussina’s first assistant coach. Apparently the first assistant head coach’s position is something the school created for the 2013-2014 season.
Mussina will receive a stipend of $4,170. Molesky will receive a lightly less stipend at $4,100.
The Warriors have not had the greatest seasons in the past few years. Last year they finished with a record of 5-17. The team has not seen a post season berth within a non-open format since 2008.
Mussina was a three-sport athlete when he attended Montoursville High School. He was a star on the basketball team, finishing his career with 1,382 points. Mussina graduated from MHS in 1987.
Mussina pitched for the Yankees and Orioles from 1991 to 2008. He ended his career on a high note with the New York Yankees, finishing with a 20-win season.
"Ninety-nine percent of the players don't get to make that choice for themselves," Mussina said on Sept. 28,2008 after winning game No. 20 according to the New York Daily News."They play the game and somebody else tells them it's time to go. I've been really lucky that I'm in a situation where if I decide enough is enough, then I get to decide for myself."
Mussina finished his major league career with 270 wins, 153 losses and a 3.68 ERA. Since his retirement he has also coached Little League Baseball and junior varsity basketball.
