Court Sets Exemption for 10-Year Old Girl to receive Lung Transplant

Sarah Murnaghan and her family are in bliss right now as a federal court judge announced that they are willing to grant exemption to save her life.

Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will also be freed from agony and pressure as the “Under 12 Rule” bypass has been approved. Judge Michael Baylson decided to lift the rule in favor of the kid who has no time left to wait until she turns 12 just to receive a lung transplant.

Sarah Murnaghan, a 10-year-old girl in Pennsylvania dying of cystic fibrosis, has been in the news for weeks now as her family showed desperation in saving her life when they first appeared in a CNN interview.

A hearing is now set on June 14 to discuss about the temporary restraining order exempting the girl from the current rule. Sebelius is also glad about the news but is now worried about the impact of this exemption in the future. The government may be faced with more scenarios where media and online attention can put so much pressure on our legislators and lawmakers forcing them to bypass any rule. Critics believe that a policy change is a better resolution at this point.

Sebelius received written requests and appeals from various Pennsylvanian congressmen to consider the girl’s case. She felt as if she was forced to decide whether the girl should live or die. “I can’t imagine anything worse than one individual getting to pick who lives and who dies,” she said in an interview with Politico.

Meanwhile, the girl’s family sent their gratitude through Fox News, “We are experiencing many emotions: relief, happiness, gratitude and, for the first time in months: hope. We cannot say enough about the global outreach and support we've received on behalf of Sarah—people of all ages and walks of life have reached out to us, prayed for us, and asked how they could help."
