Jesse Helt, the homeless guy who attended the MTV Video Music Awards with Miley Cyrus, is headed to jail. According to Page Six, Helt appeared in court on Tuesday asking Judge Monte Campbell for leniency after he violated his probation stemming from a 2010 incident.

He reportedly told the judge that he wanted "to be viewed as a good person, not a nuisance to society." The 22-year-old was sentenced to six months behind bars. In August, Helt turned himself in to Polk County jail in Oregon after police issued a warrant for his arrest.

He posted $2,500 bail and was released an hour late, the Associated Press reported. Helt was arrested in 2010 on "criminal mischief" after he tried to break into a Salem, Oregon apartment. He was placed on probation but violated the terms in 2011 after he failed to meet with probation officer or complete his community service hours.

According to Page Six, Helt couldn't do his community service because he had moved to Los Angeles to pursue modeling. He struggled to find jobs and ended up homeless off and on while in L.A.  Cyrus said she met Helt at one of the shelters.

Helt got to attend the VMAs and accepted Cyrus' award, using the time to talk to the audience about the "1.6 million runways and homeless youth who are starving, lost and scared right now."

"I know this because I am one of these people," he added. "I've survived in shelters all over this city, I've cleaned your hotel rooms, I've been an extra in your movies, I've been an extra in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have many of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."

Cyrus previously tweeted about Helt's troubled past, saying, "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included. I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."
