Wikipad Inc. announced its 7-inch Wikipad tablet on Tuesday. The tablet will be available purchase on June 11 for $249 in the U.S. There's a global launch planned for later this summer.
The tablet is meant to be a combination of all of the luxury of a tablet mixed with the comfort and control of a gaming console.
"The launch of the Wikipad 7 tablet signals a transformative turning point in the direction of the mobile gaming industry," according to the company's press release written by Wikipad Inc. Chairperson Matthew Joynes. "The tablet combines the latest range of features found in premium Android tablet together with the unrivaled console video game experience only available with a gamepad."
The tablet will operate on the Android 4.1 operating system. It contains a 1.4 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 7-inch 1280X800 IPS touch screen, 16GB of storage, 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 1GB of memory according to The International Business Times.
Apps can be downloaded from three different places: Goole Play, PlayStation Mobile and Nvidia TegraZone. Some games that will be playable on the new console tablet hybrid include: "Grand Theft Auto 3," "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" and "Riptide GP."
Although the device is nice and holds a lot of potential for classic gamers, Endgadget reports the device is the same in price to Playstation's own Playstation Vita, which can offer users a much nicer OLED screen, though it is smaller than the Wikipad. Vita also offers a much larger library of games.
The Wikipad is one of the largest devices outside of Sony's own internal products to carry the PlayStation Mobile Support. Only time will tell which one users prefer after the new product launches on June 11.
There's no new information on a rumored 10.1-inch version of the Wikipad. There was no mention of it in the press release sent out by the company today.
