A New Jersey man told a courtroom on Wednesday he "snapped" and killed a woman in 2009 after she laughed at him because he could not get an erection, MyCentralJersey.com reported.
After snorting too much cocaine and drinking too much alcohol, Gary Wilson told Carolyn Stone he would not be able to become aroused. Stone began to laugh, so Wilson punched and strangled her before taking a cinder block and dropping it on her head. Then he picked it up and did it again.
Wilson, 31, testified not at his own trial, but at the trial of another man who reportedly confessed to committing the same murder. Wilson pleaded guilty to Stone's murder in 2011 and is currently serving a 45-year sentence.
As a witness for the defense, Wilson told the Somerset County jury the defendant did not kill Stone and that he acted alone.
Prosecutors are convinced the defendant, David Granskie Jr., is one of three men who raped and killed Stone during a Memorial Day weekend gathering at Granskie's family home. Granskie, the son of Stone's boyfriend, allegedly told investigators he killed the 45-year-old. Prosecutors have already rested their case, providing no witnesses to support the confession.
But defense attorneys said Granskie's so-called confession is nothing but a heroin addict's mind "parroting back" what police already said he did, MyCentralJersey.com reported. The defendant could not have raped and killed Stone because he was sleeping when Wilson killed her, Wilson testified.
The night of the murder, Wilson said he and the other accused killer, Rocky DiTaranto, were going to have sex with Stone in the backyard of Granskie's Bridgewater home. DiTraranto eventually changed his mind, leaving Stone and Wilson.
Stone was naked when Wilson arrived behind the shed outside. But he realized he could not get an erection.
" 'What kind of man can't get aroused in front of a naked woman?' " Stone said according to Wilson.
"I tried to explain that I had been drinking too much and she just started laughing," Wilson said. "I told her it's not funny; it happens. And she kept laughing."
Wilson snapped and punched Stone, rendering her unconscious. After chocking her, he picked up a 25-pound cinder block and brought it down over her head, Wilson said.
"I decided to do it again. I didn't want her to suffer. It took everything in me to lift that cinder block back up again," Wilson said according to the news site.
DiTaranto pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated sexual assault and was given a five-year sentence. He is already out of prison.
Somerset County Assistant Prosecutor Tim Van Hise is expected to cross-examine Wilson on Thursday.
