The New York Jets play the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday in the 2014 NFL preseason. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET. Listen to the live radio broadcast via the links provided below.
New York opened their preseason with a 13-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts. First-year Jets running back Chris Johnson scored the team's only touchdowns, and incumbent starting quarterback Geno Smith completed four out of six passes in his limited playing time.
The Jets, though, are expecting big things out of Smith as he enters his second year. New York hopes the second-round pick can become their franchise quarterback, and Smith appears to be doing everything in his power to make sure that happens.
One way Smith sought to improve from his rookie campaign was with the cerebral aspect of the game. Smith spent the offseason not only studying game film of himself, but also of opposing defensive coordinators whom teams just hired - such as Jim Schwartz with Buffalo, Ray Horton with Tennessee and Teryl Austin with Detroit.
"I know the coordinator is going to have a different mind-set based on the new players that he has," Smith told the New York Daily News. "But the philosophy is the same. You can see, 'Is he an aggressive D-coordinator like (Jets coach Rex Ryan)? In crucial situations, is he going to blitz?' Things like that are what I try to look for."
Smith acknowledged his offseason film work is far from done.
"I haven't completely finished the study," he said. "I got to watch a lot of film based on what they do this year. Yeah, I got those notes, but they're useless at this point. But once you get a chance to play those teams in the regular season, I can go back to it and look at some of those tendencies I had written down."
Cincinnati, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after giving up a slew of touchdowns in last week's 41-39 loss at Kansas City. Although the quarterback-receiver tandem of Andy Dalton and A.J. Green accounted for 62 yards in limited playing time, backup quarterback Jason Campbell threw two pick-sixes and the Bengals' special teams gave up one punt return.
