Gene Simmons recently shared his thoughts on suicide and depression, telling those who see themselves as “victims” should “kill themselves.”
An interview with Song Facts dated July 31 revealed Simmons, 64, claimed to have no sympathy for drug addicts. He cited his mother’s struggles in a Nazi concentration camp as a “harsh” place, but she still is able to get up and go about her day without a negative outlook.
“No, I don't get along with anybody who's a drug addict and has a dark cloud over their head and sees themselves as a victim,” Simmons told Song Facts. “Drug addicts and alcoholics are always: ‘The world is a harsh place.’ My mother was in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany.
“I don't want to hear f**k all about ‘the world as a harsh place.’ She gets up every day, smells the roses and loves life. And for a putz, 20-year-old kid to say, ‘I'm depressed, I live in Seattle.’ F**k you, then kill yourself.”
Simmons went on to say he would call someone out on their “bluff” if they were to threaten suicide. Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, 55, took to his Twitter account to express his anger over Simmons’ comments.
“I struggled with addiction and depression but found recovery.Would you be happy if I killed myself instead? Also my 4 kids wouldnt been born,” Nikki Sixx wrote. “I wonder if @genesimmons would still say how depressed people or addicts should kill themselves if it happend to his wife or kids?”
The topics of suicide and depression have come to the forefront after it was revealed actor Robin Williams killed himself on Aug. 11. It was later revealed Williams was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, which may have been a contributing factor to his struggles with depression.
