California Granny Arrested After Toddler Drinks Meth-Laced Tea

A California woman is accused of endangering her 2-year-old granddaughter when the toddler accidentally drank tea with meth in it, authorities said.

Cynthia Ann Watson, 51, was arrested Monday after cops responded to a call from a Garner Valley residence at around 10 a.m., KTLA-TV reported. A woman, reportedly the 2-year-old's mother, said her daughter did not fall asleep the night before and was behaving erratically.

The toddler "was talking rapidly, scratching her skin, could not sit still and was very agitated," the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said according to KTLA-TV. "Thinking there might be some medical issue with her daughter, the reporting party took her to a local hospital to be examined."

Doctors were able to determine the child ingested methamphetamine. An investigation revealed the child somehow drank tea her grandmother made with the drug in it. Watson, who was staying with the family at the Pine Street home, was arrested and charged with felony child endangerment and possession of methamphetamine.

The incident began when Watson, originally from Aloha, Oregon, "made a cup of tea the night before and placed methamphetamine in the tea to get herself high," the Sheriff's Department said.

The same cup of tea was left unattended on a counter, allowing the toddler to drink from it. Medical tests on the child came back positive for methamphetamine. She is expected to make a full recovery, KTLA-TV reported.

Watson was booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning and was held on $35,000 bail. She is scheduled to appear in court in Murrieta on Wednesday.

The grandmother's arrest comes less than a week after New Jersey authorities dealt with another case involving meth and a minor.

Police in Mount Olive busted a man and woman they found high on meth in a hotel room with a sleeping child, the Daily Record reported.
