Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray of Beacon Hill, Massachusetts, has announced he will resign from his current post to run the Worcester Chamber of Commerce, reported Boston.com, Wednesday.
His new job as CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce will be located about 45 miles west from Beacon Hill-a safe distance away from the town where Murray witnessed his own reputation crumble.
The former lt. governor was in the middle of a few controversies, including one questionable, late-night car crash and a relationship with former Chelsea Housing Authority chief Michael McLaughlin, who pleaded guilty to charges of concealing his salary. On the subject of McLaughlins criminal activities, Murray said it "pisses me off."
Murray, who said to The Globe that he has mixed feelings about his new job, insists that his move did not have anything to do with the previous slip-ups.
"This has nothing to do with that," he told The Globe "This is nothing that I sought out. People came to me. People are going to believe what they want to believe, but to me this is a right fit and a right decision, and I struggled with the idea of leaving early, because there are still items on the punchlist."
Murray also spoke on some of the issues he came across during his time as lieutenant governor, including the issue of what he called "Boston-centric" focus.
"It's often times very Boston-centric, and that's at the expense of other regions," he said. "The fact of the matter is, if you took central Massachusetts and plopped it down in any other state in the country, it would be seen as a major economic force, which it is. But we don't promote it and sell it."
Murray worked closely with Governor Deval Patrick, who said Murray would be sorely missed during a press conference.
"His departure leaves a very big hole in our team. So, I'm happy for him personally, but I'm a little miffed professionally," he joked.
Murray's resignation is set for June 2.
